According to the Standard for the installation of Sprinkler Systems (NFPA 13-2013), commodities must be classified to determine appropriate protection schemes. A large portion of the warehouse’s sprinkler system was originally designed to protect miscellaneous storage. Current hazards include tall double row racks for the storage of shoes. Thus, Nortech was retained to determine the adequacy of the warehouse’s sprinkler system for the building’s current use.
Nortech visited the warehouse to gather information such as building layout, sprinkler and storage arrangements, head types, etc. With this information, Nortech performed hydraulic calculations to determine the performance of the original design. Results were then compared to requirements set forth for the site’s current commodities and it was found that the original system needed substantial upgrades to protect current hazards. Thus, Nortech constructed a letter and sprinkler drawing to show recommended upgrades.
